This scripture copied in gold ink on dark-blue paper is from Volume 6 of the ten-volume Discourse on the Theory of Consciousness (Ch. Cheng Weishi Lun). The origin of this theory is found in Indian spiritualism which professes that existence is nothing but awareness, or the state of mind. This theory stresses yoga practice to change one’s mindset and attain enlightenment. The Discourse was designated as the principal sutra of Hosso (“Idealistic”) Sect Buddhism, which embraced spiritualism or idealism, and was dominant in Nanto (Nara) Buddhism. As such, this sutra was frequently transcribed at Nara-based temples, including Kofukuji, Genkoji, Horyuji, and Yakushiji . The flyleaf depicts the illustration of the intention of a sutra, the exhibited piece is of great interest in terms of religious art history.
