In july 1549, Spanish Christian missionaries arrived by sea in Kgoshima. This is where the history of Chirtianity in Japan begins. Subsequently, many Portuguese and Dutch people came here from the South Seas, and they were thus referred to as People of the South (nanbanjin). With them they brought a great variety of artifacts of Western culture. Elevated towers in castle architecture are good examples of this. In particular, the guns they brought with them rapidly changed the whole nature of warfare in Japan, a development which had its own extensive and profound effects on the way of life of the Japanese. The newcomers found the lacquered househole goods of Japan very attractive and saw in them an exotic beauty. Despite their vastly different concepts of both utility and beauty, they commissioned Japanese craftmen to produce artifacts to their designs and were very happy to carry the results with them home to their own countries. Indeed, many of these lacquerware craft goods are still today referred to 'japan' in Europe. This box was produced at that time, and it was reimported back into Japan in modern times. It illusrates difficulties of the craftspeople in working to realize designs and motifs of a very different culture.
