This is a segment from theNew Imperially Compiled Poetic Anthology, (Volume 6 ‘Winter Songs’), compiled by Fujiwara-no-Sadaie (also Teika, 1162-1241) upon the imperial edict of Emperor Goshirakawa. The handwriting is attributed to the Priest Jien (also Jichin, 1155-1225). However, comparison with Jien’s authentic handwriting suggests this segment is by a different calligrapher. The style, however, suggests that the manuscript was created toward mid-13th century, not too distant from 1235, when the New Imperially Compiled Poetic Anthology was completed.
