Fine mica powder is dusted on torinoko paper (strong, smooth Japanese paper), which is further decorated with various sizes of gold and silver foils. These foils are covered with tiny strips of silver (noge, or barley beard) for added decorative effect. The under-drawing of water shrubbery in ultramarine and green copper rust adds further grace and elegance to this calligraphy masterpiece. This segment shows a hand writing of a poem from the Collection of Ancient and Modern Poems (Volume 19). Originally, the segment was a part of a bound book. The calligraphic style of the Hosshoji School, established by Fujiwara-no-Tadamichi (1097-1164), has powerful strokes and this manuscript is likely to have been created during the mid-13th century. The segment’s name ‘Nakayama-gire’ may be attributed to the Nakayama Dainagon family which has preserved it. Ancient calligraphy master, Fujiwara-no-Tadachika (1131-95) is a remote ancestor of this family.
