This plate shows a fragment from a calligraphic reproduction of the Kokin Wakashu (Collection of Ancient and Modern Poems), showing ‘Autumn Poems’ in Volume 4, but it was originally part of a thread-stitched volume. Since there are extant fragments of copies of Shika Wakashu (lit. ‘collection of Japanese poems of flowers’) and the Senzai Wakashu (Anthology of Japanese Poems of a Thousand Years) of the same style, the original book could have been an ambitious edition including the complete eight great anthologies of ancient poems, created for ornamental purposes for nobility. The calligraphy is written on glazed chosi paper. Light Indian-ink borders drawn on the margins of the leaf serve to create a uniform appearance. This is a style often seen in the handwritten copies (manuscripts) from the last years of the Heian Period. The calligrapher is generally believed to be the Priest Jakuren, a poet of the early Kamakura Period. When compared with the Kumano kaishi poems authentically rendered by Jakuren, however, this segment shows a different hand but of a similar style. So one can assume that this piece was written by a calligraphy master in Jakuren’s contempolary. The Kohitsu Meiyoshu (Collection of Ancient Calligraphy Masterpieces) attributes the origin of this segment’s name to Kinoshita Uemon, who was the lord of a castle in Bungo Country (Oita Prefecture). Uemon was a nephew of O-ne(Generalissimo Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s principal wife, also called Kita-no-Mandokoro and later Kodai-in) and was the third son of Iesada, the Lord of Higo (Kumamoto Prefecture). This segment may have been named ‘Uemon-gire’ due to the fact that the complete set was Uemon’s treasured possession.
