Two young cherry trees with supple stems grow on a little mound of dirt, as if wanting to reach the sky. In the Makura-no-Soshi (The Pillow Book), Sei Shonagon writes that the “best cherry trees are those with large blossoms, dark leaves and thin, flexible twigs.” The decorative cherry trees on the exhibited letter box remind the viewer of this passage from the ancient literary masterpiece.
