Compared with most letter boxes(fubako), this one is rather small, and as such, it may have been used by a noble woman. Both the box’s cover and bottom show beautifully painted young cherry twigs with blossoms. The slender and soft twigs are drawn horizontally and decorated with blossoms and leaves rendered using various makie techniques. The exquisite and elegant appearance is certainly fit for a woman of noble birth. The cord ring, made of gilt copper, is decorated with a paulownia motif.
