久隅守景〈くすみもりかげ・生没年未詳〉は、江戸時代前期の狩野派の画家。無下斎・無礙斎などを号した。狩野探幽の門下四天王の１人に数えられた。探幽の姪・神足常庵（名・守周）と結婚、１男１女（ともに探幽の弟子となる）をもうけたようで、その娘（名・雪）は同門の画人と駆け落ち、また、長男の彦十郎も郭遊びが原因で破門となったという。これが原因で、守景も破門されたといわれる。一時、金沢に滞在（前田侯に仕えたとも）、晩年は京都に住んだ。田園風俗を描いた「夕顔棚納涼図屏風」や「四季耕作図屏風」などの代表作を残す。創造性を欠いていた江戸狩野と対照的に、農民生活に取材した清新な感覚が守景の真骨頂であった。本図は、茄子を水墨で軽快なリズムで描く。飾り気のない作品で、守景の特徴をあらわしたものである。
