舞台上の歌舞伎踊りを見物する老若男女。演目は、能楽の「松風村雨」。観阿弥の原作を世阿弥が改作したという「熊野・松風に米の飯」とはやされた人気の作品であった。長上下を着けた男が、須磨の浦で塩屋に戻ってきた２人の海女の少女に宿を乞う。男は在原行平の古跡の松樹を弔ったことを語る。それを聞いた２人は涙ながらに、自分たちこそ行平に愛された松風・村雨という海女の霊だと明かし、当時の有様を語る。塩汲み桶を肩から下ろして、男と問答をする。繊細で簡素な描線ながら、軽妙な構図。淡い色彩に２人の海女の悲恋の情が暗示的に描かれる。日本美術史において初期風俗画と呼ばれるもの。狩野派の絵師によって描かれた寛文期（17世紀後半）の作品である。
