まず、狩野栄信〈かのうながのぶ・1775-1828〉が画面中央に薄墨で円を描き、円窓に映る芦図を描く。後に、その円窓を月に見立てて詠んだ句を伴林光平〈ばんばやしみつひら・1813-64〉が自書したもの。 狩野栄信は、江戸時代後期の狩野派の画家。主に伊川院の号で知られる。狩野惟信〈これのぶ＝養川院・1754-1808〉の長男で、木挽町狩野家（狩野尚信の系譜）を継承、享和２年〈1802〉に法眼、文化13年〈1816〉に法印となる。この画の落款に「伊川院法印（印・栄信）」とあり、栄信の晩年の筆と知れる。これに賛を加えた伴林光平は、幕末の尊皇攘夷派の国学者。文久３年〈1863〉に組織された天誅組に参画、捕らえられて翌年に獄中にて死去する。独特の光平の筆癖にさらに輪をかけた筆勢である。月見の酒宴における戯れ書きであろう。酔中にありながらも、当時の国学者特有の和様の骨格を保っており、能書の面目を示す作品といえる。
