Brown Bird Wood Rectangle Beak

A crow and a snowy heron rest their wings above the withered waterside plants. White and black, with not the slightest resemblance at all to each other, these forms are nevertheless symmetrically deployed as the contrast which gives the picture its name. Ito Jakuchu (1716-1800) was a painter active in the middle of the Edo period. Born into the household of a vegetable merchant in Kyoto’s Nishiki-koji district, after studying in the Kano school and researching the painting styles of the Song and Yuan in China, he developed his own independent painting style. The influence of Ogata Korin (1658-1716) can be seen in the decorative quality of his flower and bird paintings. Jakuchu also produced rather eccentric inkwash works. He was particularly skilled in paintings of chickens. This painting is a fine example vividly showing the delicacy of Jakuchu’s technique. With a very concise and bold picture composition, deploying his brush brilliantly to create the inkwash surface, Jakuchu developed his own imaginative world with extraordinary directness. The text reads: Friends who have not resemblance at all to each other are enjoying the breeze over the river. The calligrapher is Yokoi Yayu (1702-83), haiku poet.
