法然〈ほうねん・1133-1212〉は、鎌倉新仏教のひとつ浄土宗の開祖。諱は源空。比叡山に入り、叡空の弟子となって研鑽を積み、承安５年〈1175〉、中国浄土宗の高僧善導の『観無量寿経疏』によって開眼、専修念仏による往生を説いた。南無阿弥陀仏の名号を称え、念仏すれば万人が極楽浄土に往生できると説く考え方は、理解を得やすく、貴族を中心に、武士・庶民にまで支持を拡げていった。没後、その布教の一助として法然の生涯を絵巻にあらわした絵巻が作られた。京都・知恩院蔵の48巻本をはじめ、多くの伝本が現存する。本図は、いずれの系統に属するか不明ながら、貼り札に見える「長楽寺逗留松山一見ノ処」から、建永２年〈1207〉配流のため讃岐に到着、松山で観桜を行ったというが、その場面であろうか。
