本多忠政〈ほんだただまさ・1575-1631〉は、江戸時代前期の譜代大名。通称平八郎。本多家は代々徳川家に仕え、忠政も、生涯において、家康・秀忠・家光の３代に仕えた。慶長３年〈1598〉４月美濃守となり、同５年の関ヶ原の戦では秀忠について信濃国上田城を攻め、大坂冬の陣・夏の陣にも従軍して功績をあげた。その後、元和３年〈1617〉７月播磨国姫路に移り、15万石を領し、姫路城の修築も行った。寛永８年〈1631〉秀忠の見舞いで江戸に向かったが、途中病を得て、江戸到着の８月10日、57歳で急死した。この画像は、忠政の三男能登守忠義〈ただよし・1602-76〉に与えられた。元和８年〈1622〉８月15日のことであった。忠政48歳の寿像（生存中の肖像画）と知る。折柄、秀忠・家光の信任篤き時期、忠政の絶頂期にあたる。その充実した境涯が顔貌の表情に見事に描き出されている。同じ年紀が左上に記され、「能登守与之」の記載のない、左向きの画像が、本多家に残る。同時に何枚かを描かせたものであったか。
