高山彦九郎〈たかやまひこくろう・1747-93〉は、江戸時代後期の尊皇思想家。上野国細谷村（群馬県太田市）の郷士の家に生まれる。名は正之、字は仲縄、彦九郎は通称である。13歳の時に『太平記』を読み、新田義貞の子孫であることを知り、勤王の志を立てる。18歳の時に遺書を残して京都に遊学。以後、各地を巡歴しながら積極的に勤王論を提唱した。その行動は、尊皇思想の影響を嫌忌する幕府の厳しい監視を受ける結果を招き、ついに寛政５年〈1793〉、九州遊説中、久留米にて自刃するに至った。享年47歳。奇行多く、蒲生君平・林子平とともに「寛政の三奇人」と称せられた。高山彦九郎の姿は、京都三条大橋のたもとに建つ、皇居を伏拝する彫像が有名であるが、本図は、その本格的な肖像画として稀少の存在である。帯刀して正座する晩年の肖像である。画の筆者は、江戸時代後期の画家、原在中〈はらざいちゅう・1750-1837〉である。臥遊とも号した。石田幽汀あるいは円山応挙の門人とされるが、中国・明の画法や土佐派の古画などを独学、みずから精緻で装飾的な画風を確立、原派と呼ばれる一派を形成した。本図は、「仲縄翁像八十六翁原在中（印「臥游」）」 により、天保６年〈1835〉、86歳の時の作品とわかる。
