This segment shows a winter song from Volume 6 of the Kokin Wakasyu(Collection of Ancient and Modern Poems) on decorative Japanese paper with a brilliant sheen achieved by the use of mica powder. Originally, a part of a chodo-tehon (ornament in an aristocratic household) comprising two book-style volumes of alternating decorative paper of the North Sung (Song) Dynasty China with mica dust, Kumogami (lit. paper with floating cloud pattern) of indigo and purple dyed fibers and raw paper, this segment is attributed to Fujiwara-no-Yukinari (also Kozei, 972-1027) or Fujiwara-no-Kinto (966-1041), but without verification. The calligraphic style and the paper suggest that it was written during the latter half of the Heian Period. The segment’s name derives from Araki Sohaku (1600-85), master calligrapher of the early Edo Period, who owned this piece.
