毘沙門天は、仏教世界の中心にそびえる須弥山の四方を護る四天王のうち、北方を守護する善神とある。四天王像の１尊、あるいは十二天の１尊として制作されることが多い。四天王中の最強の神、また現世利益の功徳を得る神として信仰を集め、彫刻・仏画にあらわされた。ふつう、独尊の場合を毘沙門天、四天王のひとつとしては多聞天と呼ばれる。厳めしさを象徴するかのごとく、忿怒相で甲冑を身につけた武将形にあらわされる。この毘沙門天像は、火焔光背を負い、右手は宝棒を持って腰に当て、左手の掌上には宝塔を乗せ、邪鬼の上に立つ姿に描かれる。さらに、下方に吉祥天女と善（禅）膩師童子をしたがえた三尊形式につくられる。細緻な描線、美しい彩色をとどめるところから鎌倉時代後期の優品である。
