絹地に慈恩大師の立像を画面いっぱい、量感豊かに描いた祖師像。右手に数珠を懸け、両手の指を交互に組んだ珍しい印相につくる。その両の眼をきっと見開き、前方を鋭く見据える。眉は跳ね上がった独特の容姿は、身長８尺を超える偉丈夫と伝える大師の容貌を反映したものであろう。 慈恩大師〈じおん・632-82。名は窺基〉は、中国・唐代の学僧。17歳で出家、高僧玄奘に師事、訳経に励み、とくに法相宗の根本経典となる『成唯識論』（10巻）の翻訳を完成させたことで、同宗の開祖とされる。慈恩大師の画像は、すでに唐代から描かれており、宋代には多く流布していた。わが国にも早くからその画像が将来されており、坐像につくる薬師寺所蔵の国宝が有名であるが、これは、それに先行する興福寺一乗院伝来本にならったものである。もともと、慈恩大師像は、慈恩大師の忌日（11月13日）に、大師の学徳を忍び、学僧の研鑽、法相宗の隆昌を目的として催される慈恩会に際し、法会の本尊として制作された。こうした慣例を背景に、本図もしかるべき法相宗の寺に伝来したものであろう。
