仏涅槃図は、『大般涅槃経』に説かれる釈迦入滅の情景を描いた絵画をいう。クシナガラ（漢訳は草城あるいは上茅城）の沙羅双樹のもと、頭を北にし右脇を下に牀台に横臥し、周りに諸菩薩が取り囲み、加えて、釈迦の死を悲しむ仏弟子・俗衆の姿や象・鹿・牛・雉子など数十の鳥獣が描かれる。仏涅槃図が描かれる構図は、大別して２種ある。ひとつは、画面が正方あるいは横長で、釈迦は両手を体側につけ、体をまっすぐ伸ばして仰臥もしくは横臥する。その上、釈迦の足もとから見た構図（牀台を向かって右側面を見せる）に描くもので、これは、古い時代の涅槃図に見られ、唐画の影響を受ける形式といわれる。もうひとつは、鎌倉時代以降の新しい形式で、画面はおおむね縦長、釈迦の姿は、右手を枕に、右脇を下に横たわり、両膝を曲げて両足を重ねる。また、釈迦を頭部側から見た構図（牀台を向かって左側面を見せる）となる。さらに、描かれる鳥獣の数が多いのが特徴である。中国・宋画の影響といわれる。本図は、後者にあたる。上部に真ん中に満月を描き、さらに左上から降下してくる摩耶夫人（釈迦の生母）の一行が悲嘆にくれる表情に描き加えられる。きわめて丁寧な描線で、それぞれの表情が生き生きと描かれる。色合いなどから室町時代・15世紀の作品であろう。
