阿弥陀如来は、西方十万億土の極楽浄土で説法をする仏とされる。釈尊の教えが消滅、修行の結果とされる悟りも得られない世の中、すなわち末法に入ったと観念した平安末期に、この阿弥陀如来を信仰することによって極楽往生がかなうと信じる浄土信仰が隆盛をきわめた。こうした極楽成仏を願う人々の信心の礼拝本尊として描かれたのが阿弥陀来迎図である。本図は、画面中央部に来迎印（右手を上げ、左手は親指と人差し指で輪をつくる印相）を結ぶ阿弥陀如来を正面向きに配し、向かって右には、両手で蓮台を捧げる観音菩薩、左には、合掌する勢至菩薩が対峙する。いずれも雲上に駕す姿にあらわされる、いわゆる阿弥陀三尊来迎図である。臨終の信者の前にこの三尊が出現し、極楽浄土に迎えるところを主題にする図は、阿弥陀三尊来迎図と呼ばれ、浄土信仰・阿弥陀信仰が盛んになった平安時代から描かれた。三尊の足下には霊芝雲が渦巻き、また、ともに円い頭光（仏像の背後に表される仏菩薩の発する光明）を伴う。さらに阿弥陀如来の背後からは、周囲に15条の二重光明が引かれる。全身を金彩で表現する、いわゆる皆金色像に描かれる。三尊の表情、着衣の形式などおよそ鎌倉時代後期の特徴をあらわしている。
