１幅の中に、金剛吼（中央）・無畏十力吼（右下）・竜王吼（左下）・無量力吼（左上）・雷電吼（右上）の５つの菩薩を描く。これらは五大力菩薩・五大力吼ともよばれる。護国の経典といわれる『仁王経』の所説に基づいて行われた儀式、仁王会の本尊がこの五大力菩薩であった。国王が三宝（仏・法・僧）を護持すれば、この５菩薩が国土の四方と中央にあって王を守護するという。本図は、鳩摩羅什訳『仁王般若波羅蜜経』（旧訳仁王経）に説かれる５菩薩を描く。中央の金剛吼のみを蓮華座に坐す姿に描かれ、ほかは踏割蓮華座に片足を蹴り上げて立つ姿につくられる。千宝相輪（金剛吼）、金剛杵（無畏十力吼）千宝羅網（雷電吼）など持物もそれぞれの別がある。いずれも忿怒相にあらわされるのは、密教の影響をうけたものであろう。比較的遺例がすくなく、室町時代・15世紀の作例ながら、貴重な存在である。
