真言宗においては、インドで生まれ中国に伝わった真言密教をわが国に流伝護持した８人の高僧を真言八祖と呼んで崇拝してきた。龍猛(第１祖）・龍智（第２祖）・金剛智（第３祖）・不空（第４祖）・善無畏（第５祖）・一行（第６祖）・恵果（第７祖）・空海（第８祖）の８人である。灌頂（密教において法を受け継ぐ時の儀式）の際に、受者に法脈の継承を自覚をうながすために、この八祖の画像が掛けられることから、多くの作例が伝存するが、八祖像を完存する最古の遺品は神護寺に伝来する８幅（祖本となったのは教王護国寺蔵の真言七祖像）。以来、これが祖本となって同種の画像が描かれた。この恵果の像も、もとは八祖像としてつくられたものの１幅である。恵果〈けいか・746-805〉は、長安の出身で、不空に師事してその正嫡の弟子となり、国師と崇められた。空海の入唐求法の師でもある。床几に坐し、斜め向きの姿の恵果像。足下には沓と浄瓶が置かれる。さらに、恵果のうしろには侍者である童子の立ち姿が添えられる。画面上部には、色紙形の区画がもうけられているが、本来書写される伝記はない。和様化した相好や色彩から室町時代・15世紀の制作であろう。
