愛染明王は、その名のとおり、愛情・情欲をつかさどり、愛欲貪染をそのまま浄菩提心（悟りの心）にかえる力をもち、煩悩即菩提を象徴した明王。すなわち、人間にはさまざまな欲望があるが、この欲望は人間には滅亡へつながる力と、逆に生きて行くうえでより多くのものを可能にする力を合わせ持つが、この欲望のエネルギーを、悟りを求め自らを高めようとする積極的なエネルギーに浄化しようというのである。本図は、この愛染明王に不動明王の頭部を合体した形につくられる異形の像。不動明王は、大日如来が忿怒身に変わった姿とされ、あらゆる災難を取り除き所願を成就させる力を持つとされる。この２身が合体した姿は、敬愛和合の本誓（衆生の救済と悟りの誓願）をあらわす形であり、相互の利益を兼ねるものとして信仰された。身体が赤く、獅子冠をかぶり、三目四臂の姿が愛染明王。手には五鈷杵、五鈷鈴、弓矢を持つ。他方、身体が黒く、頭に八葉蓮華を置き、二臂の姿であらわされるのが不動明王。手には、利剣、羂索を持つ。宝瓶に安置した蓮台に坐し、不動明王の脇侍である矜羯羅・制吒迦の２童子を従える。比較的遺品の少ない仏画として貴重な存在である。
