The form of this statue is fundamentally distinct from that of the usual Amida images. On the eight-petalled lotus dais the five-pronged vajra('diamond pounder' a ritual object of Esoteric Buddhism) is horizontal and above that the single-pronged vajra is held vertically. While at first glance this does appear to be an unstable arrangement, we soon realize that we have entered the ethereal world of the Buddha. Seated on a large lotus dais in the upper part of the painting. Amida's surplice has red glow to it generated by a pigment known as guhari. This beautiful image represents the Buddha's mission of bringing light into the world. This is a rare and very valuable painting. Symbolizing the message of salvation through the remission of sins, it was originally an object of worship in a Buddhist temple. As such, it is known as the Guhari Esoteric Formula. With fine, delicate lines executed in the kirikane technique of pasting tiny traiangles or squares of gold and silver foils into the painting, it has a truly majestic presence.
