大田南畝〈おおたなんぽ・1749-1823〉は、江戸時代後期の文人。名は覃（ふかし）、通称を直次郎。南畝の他、寝惚先生（ねぼけせんせい）、四方赤良（よものあから）、杏花園（きょうかえん）、蜀山人（しょくさんじん）、南極老人（なんきょくろうじん）など多くの別号を持つ。官吏としても有能であったが、博学多識の文才が彼の名を上げた。明和４年〈1767〉、狂詩文集『寝惚先生文集』の出版を契機に盛んな文筆活動に入り、とくに生活や社会を滑稽に風刺した狂歌・狂詩は大いに歓迎されて、文壇の指導者的地位に推されていった。草書、仮名をよくし、飄々とした味わいのある筆跡を残している。が、書技の根底は、唐様にある。『吾妻鏡』（第六・文治２年〈1186〉８月16日の項）に、奥州平泉へ下向の途中、鎌倉に杖をとどめた西行法師が、源頼朝から授かった純銀の猫を門外に遊ぶ子供に与えたという記事が残る。この作品は、その逸話をもとに、「人間万事塞翁馬（人間の運命のはかりしれないことの喩え）」の諺（『准南子・人間訓』所収の故事）になぞらえて書いたもの。無欲であることをよしとする意で、江戸時代後期の豪商・広瀬久兵衛〈ひろせきゅうべえ・1790-1871〉の遺訓にもなったという。狂歌師としての面目躍如の作といえる。
