伊藤仁斎〈いとうじんさい・1627-1705〉は江戸時代の儒者。古学堀川学派の祖。名は維楨（これえだ）。敬斎、仁斎と号す。京都の商家に生まれ、幼少のころより学問を志し、朱子学を学んだ。のち、孔子、孟子の原典にあたり、儒学本来の思想と考えられるものを独学で体系づけ、その学問を「古学」と称した。寛文２年〈1662〉、京都堀川の自宅で私塾古義堂（こぎどう）を開き、長男の東涯〈とうがい・1670-1736〉や稲生若水〈いのうじゃくすい・1655-1715〉らの弟子を育成し、儒学思想の普及・定着に大きな功績を残した。「克己復礼」とは、『論語』の顔淵の言葉からの引用で、「己に克ち、礼に復す」、つまり、自分の欲望や邪念に打ち克ち、礼の本質にたちかえるという意。覇気に満ちた書で、自らの学問に対する気概が偲ばれる。
