華岡青洲〈はなおかせいしゅう・1760-1835〉は、江戸時代後期の外科医。名は震（ふるう）、字は伯行。通称を随賢といい、青洲はその号。紀州に生まれ祖父の代より医を業とし、青洲も京都で吉益南涯〈よしますなんがい・1750-1813〉から古医法を、大和見立〈やまとけんりゅう・1750-1827〉から西洋流外科の医術を学び、後を継いだ。漢蘭医法を折衷し「内外合一・活物窮理」の説を唱え、20数年の苦心の末、麻沸散（まふつさん）という麻酔薬を発明。全身麻酔下での乳癌摘出手術に世界で初めて成功した。その業績により、我が国の外科学は飛躍的な改善発展を遂げた。門弟は千人以上集まったという。また、京へ出たときに儒学者たちと交遊し、儒学のみならず明・清の書法を学んだ。この「君子必慎交遊焉」（君子は必ず交遊を慎む）は、『顔氏家訓』（慕賢第七）に出てくる言葉で、「君子は必ず交遊関係を慎重に選ぶ」の意。伝存遺墨の少ない青洲の筆跡として貴重な価値をもつ。見るからに洒脱で趣のある書風である。
