大塩平八郎〈おおしおへいはちろう・1793-1837〉は、江戸時代後期の儒者。名は後素、平八郎は通称。家職の大坂町奉行所与力をつとめ、吟味役として役人・豪商の腐敗を糺明して名声を上げた。文政13年〈1830〉に辞して以後は、もっぱら学問に専念した。かれは林述斎〈はやしじゅっさい・1768-1841〉に朱子学を学び、のち陽明学に転じた。著述のかたわら私塾「洗心洞（せんしんどう）」を開いて子弟教育にも力を注いだ。天保７年〈1836〉の大飢饉の際、窮民救済に立ち上がり、蜂起を企図した。が、失敗に終わり、かれは自殺した。45歳であった。これは、「咸」一字を大書する。「咸」は「みな・ことごとく」の意。剛毛であふれんばかりの力をみなぎらせた筆致は、かれの性格の一端を垣間見る思いがする。当時の儒者に通行の唐様のスタイルである。署名も含めてじつに達筆であったことを証明する作品である。
