もとは、紺紙に銀泥の界を引き、１行９基の多宝塔を雲母で型押し、その塔内に経文の１字１字を金字で書写した荘厳な写経であった。が、永い伝世のうちに雲母の宝塔は剥落、わずかにその痕跡を残すのみである。『法華経』譬喩品第三の断簡。もともとは、『法華経』（28巻）に開経（『無量義経』）・結経（『観普賢経』）を合わせた「法華経一品経経供養」の一部であったものである。筆者は、藤原行成の５代目子孫、藤原定信〈ふじわらのさだのぶ・1088-1154？〉。スピード感あふれる筆の運び、右肩を極端に上げる特有の書風は、定信が23年を費やして「一切経」（5048巻）を日課に、単独で書写を完成したことによって生まれた速写のための側筆の筆法による習い癖に由来するものであろう。伝存する数は少なく、平安時代の装飾経のうち、一字宝塔経の貴重な遺品である。
