Sangoku Hikkaido (years of birth and death unknown) was a calligrapher with an active career during the mid-17th c. and the author of the 20-volume Complete Works of Sangoku Hikkaido, describing the famous living quarters of Zen Buddhists from Japan and China. This book became a handy textbook for calligraphy students. According to the Essays by Sanei written by Mochizuki Sanei (1698-1769), Sangoku was a vassal serving the household of Tokugawa Mitsukuni (1628-1700) of Mito (Ibaraki Prefecture). The exhibit is a copy of 7 Japanese poems (waka) and 5 Chinese poems (kanshi) from the Shinsen Roeishu (lit. Newly Selected Poems for Recitation). Sangoku’s brushwork reflects training in the Oie School, from which he deliberately departed to enhance his artistic impression. At the workpiece’s end are his signature, seal and a rectangular stamp (kanbou-in) certifying that this was the artist’s original work. Perhaps it was created upon commission. The five pieces of paper with fabric imprints are sealed together into a scroll. The first paper shows swirling waves and seashells, drawn with yellow mud on a yellowish background. The second paper has a base coat of blue mica, on which interlocked hexagonal tortoise-shell patterns (kumikikkou) are drawn. A pine tree and phoenix are visible in the round window. The third sheet shows vine-arabesque on yellowish paper; the fourth, the same arabesque but on blue mica-coated paper. The fifth sheet is covered with line drawings of gingko-leaf motifs on a yellowish base coat.
