Ogata Soken (1621-1687) was a tradesman/artisan of the early Edo Period. The famous painter Ogata Korin (1658-1716) and potter Ogata Kenzan (1663-1743) were Soken’s second and third sons. Since the time of Soken’s grandfather Dohaku, the Ogata family had a kimono tailoring shop in Kyoto known by the name of Karigane-Ya. Dohaku married the elder sister, Hoshu, of one of the most famous artists of the day, Hon-ami Koetsu (1558-1637). The shop thrived, winning the patronage of celebrities such as Lady Tofukumon-In (consort to Emperor GoMizuno-o) and the Edo Shogun’s Harem. The family kimono business was most successful during Soken’s time. The wealthy merchant was also well-trained in Koetsu-style calligraphy. Soken’s father, Sohaku, was also an accomplished writer and painter of the Koetsu School. One can see the strong ties between the Ogata and Hon-ami households. The exhibited hanging scroll shows a poem cited from the Shin Shui Wakashu (New Collection of Gleanings of Japanese Poetry) written on silk. The scroll has gold-mud decorated borders at the top and the bottom. The original poem appears in Vol. 6 of “Winter Poems” of the said anthology. The original scroll may have been produced upon somebody’s commission by quoting poems from imperially-edited anthologies. The highly trained hand is comparable to that of Soken’s master, Kojima Soshin (1580-1655?), who was an accomplished Koetsu-style calligrapher.
Poem title unknown by High Priest Nyogan:Near a hamlet in Shigaraki (Koga City, Shiga Pref.), autumn foliage has fallen, leaving a gloomy sight. It is made yet sadder by the late autumn drizzle.
