Hosokawa Tsunatoshi (1643-1714) was a feudal lord of Kumamoto Province. He was called Rokumaru in childhood. Rokumaru’s father, Mitsunao (1619-1650), had left a will that his fief should be returned to the central government after his death. The government, however, granted the land to the young heir Rokumaru and appointed Ogasawara Tadazane (1596-1667), the lord of Kokura (today’s Kita-Kyushu City, Fukuoka Pref.), to supervise local administration in Kumamoto. Rokumaru came of age in 1653, was received in audience by Shogun Tokugawa Ietsuna ¬(1641-1680) and given the name Tsunatoshi. He retired from his official post in July 1712 and died at age 72 on November 12, 1714.The exhibited brushwork shows a huge character denoting “willow.” Perhaps young Rokumaru, who signed the work, was taught to be flexible and malleable like the tree. It is a testimony that Tsunatoshi was already showing great artistic talent in his childhood.
