Toyotomi Hideyori (1593-1615) was the second son of General Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1536-1598; one of the most powerful men in medieval Japan), born of Lady Yodo (1567-1615), the first daughter of Lord Asai Nagamasa (1545-1573). Tokugawa Ieyasu (1542-1616) assumed power after the Battle of Sekigahara, and the once powerful Toyotomi Clan was humiliated when Hideyori was demoted to a mere provincial lord. Hideyori tried to restore family glory by marrying Princess Sen (1597-1666), the daughter of Tokugawa Hidetada (1579-1632), who reigned as the second Shogun in Edo. After Hideyori was beaten in the Osaka Summer Campaign, he was forced to commit suicide at age 23, along with his mother, Lady Yodo.Hideyori was an excellent calligrapher since childhood and wrote about a dozen deified names between the ages of 5 and 12. His style usually shows the influence of his renga teacher, Satomura Joha (1524-1603). The exhibited deified name, however, shows traces of the Jimyo-In School style, which was popular among young nobles of the day. The Sumiyoshi Shrine in Settsu (today’s Osaka and Hyogo Prefectures) attracted worshippers as the guardian god of poetry. Hideyori must have been asked to write this deified name to hang for a poetry composition party when he was only 10 or so.
