Dried bulbs of cloves were used in ancient times to produce fragrances and to dye paper. The plant’s strong pungent smell was an effective insect repellent. In shakyo production, rendering the paper insect-resistant was an important concern, as sutras were meant to be preserved eternally. The exhibited segment shows traces of clove juice sprayed on Japanese washi paper, which was then ruled with gold mud and dusted evenly with a fine sand of gold, resulting in one of the most gorgeously decorated papers on which the Sutra of Meditation on the Bodhisattva of Universal Virtue (Kanfugen-Kyo) was transcribed. Originally, this segment was part of a ten-scroll set containing the eight volumes of the Lotus Sutra, the opening sutra (Sutra of Innumerable Meanings), and the closing sutra (Sutra of Meditation on the Bodhisattva of Universal Virtue). Later, during the Edo Period, a connoisseur/appreciator of classic calligraphic works determined that the exhibited piece was written by Ono-no-Michikaze (also pronounced “Tofu”: 894-966), one of the Three Master Calligraphers. Regardless of whether or not it was truly written by Michikaze, the piece’s elegant and lavish writing attests to the style’s popularity during the 10th through early 11th-centuries. However, the name for the segment, “Aichi-Gire”, derives from Kasugai City, Aichi Prefecture, where Michikaze hailed from.
