尭孝〈ぎょうこう・1391-1455〉は、室町時代中期の歌僧。二条派歌壇の和歌四天王と称された頓阿〈1289-1372〉の曾孫。父尭尋〈ぎょうじん・?-1412?〉も飛鳥井雅縁〈あすかいまさより・1358-1428〉とならぶ二条派の歌人で、歌壇の指導にあたっていた。尭孝は雅縁の子雅世〈まさよ・1390-1452〉と共に活躍し、後花園天皇〈ごはなぞのてんのう・1419-70〉の勅命を受けて『新続古今和歌集』（20巻）を撰進した。書道史上においては、飛鳥井雅縁の宋雅（そうが）流の流れを汲む、尭孝流という一派の祖。正統的な書からかけ離れた個性的な書風を展開しており、この短冊においてもその特色があらわれている。掲載の歌は『続千載和歌集』巻第五に収められるもので、頓阿の師である二条為世〈ためよ・1250-1338〉の詠歌。通常は、他者の歌を記した場合、筆者がこのように自署を加える例はなく、不可思議にして稀有な遺品といえる。
