Imadegawa Harusue (1539-1617) was the first son of Minister of the Left Kinhiko (1506-78), of the prestigious Imadegawa Family originated by Kanesue (1280-1338), the fourth son of Saionji Sanekane (1249-1322). In 1545, Harusue’s name was changed from that of his infant one, Sanetsugu. He later climbed the administrative ladder to the high post of Minister of the Right. Securing an alliance with Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1536-98), Harusue helped Hideyoshi become nominated Regent (Jp. Kampaku), proving his influence over the imperial court. However, when his son-in-law, Toyotomi Hidetsugu (1568-95) got involved in the Jurakutei Castle fund embezzlement in 1595, Harusue was exiled to Echigo Province. Pardoned in the following year, he was reinstated as Minister of the Right. He died at age 79 in 1617.Politically ambitious, Harusue had a talent for succeeding in turbulent years, but he was also a cultured man with achievements in poetry and calligraphy. He was admired as an achieved Sonchin School writer, as the exhibited tanzaku prove. This poem beginning “Beautiful colors and fragrances….” is written on paper of indigo-dyed kumogami (cloud-patterned paper) lavishly decorated with clouds and pine trees in gold mud.
Untitled Poem: Beautiful colors and fragrances are never lacking at Sakuragi Shrine (Nara Prefecture; “sakuragi” means “cherry trees” in Japanese). While some blossoms fall, new ones take their place.
