新政府軍と旧幕府側の彰義隊による上野戦争を描いた永島芳虎の錦絵。元は9枚組だが左端の2枚が欠けている。上野戦争は錦絵の題材として盛んに取り上げられ、多くの絵師によりさまざまな種類が出板された。永島芳虎は歌川芳虎の別名で、明治初年には錦絵絵師番付でトップクラスの人気を誇った。「東台」は上野寛永寺の山号東叡山を指し、この戦いで寛永寺に立てこもった彰義隊は大村益次郎の指揮する新政府軍によって壊滅させられた。洋服を身に纏い右から鉄砲や大砲（1枚目右下）を駆使して攻めるのが新政府軍で、一方左手（寛永寺境内）に陣取る彰義隊は和服に刀で武装している。上野戦争の最激戦地と言われる黒門（3枚目）や、上野公園に現存する清水観音堂（4枚目）、山門（5、6枚目）などの様子が描かれ、6、7枚目には逃げ惑う僧侶もみられる。また欠けている8、9枚目には寛永寺貫主の輪王寺宮（のちの北白川宮能久親王）が落ち延びる様子などが描かれている。こうして江戸市中が騒然とする状況下で、福澤諭吉は2里（約8㎞）程はなれた芝新銭座の慶應義塾において時間割通り講義を続けたのである。（横山寛）
