武蔵国忍藩（現在の埼玉県行田市）の尾崎石城が、文久元年（1861）から翌年4月にかけて記した絵入りの日記。絵を得意とする石城によって、食事・酒宴の光景、読書の様子、祭りの賑わいなどが豊かな色彩でユーモラスに描かれており、当時の武士の日常生活をうかがい知ることができる。日記の著者である尾崎石城（準之助）は十人扶持（扶持とは月ごとに支給される手当）のいわゆる「下級武士」であった。しかしその収入だけで生活は立ちゆかず、石城は得意の絵の才能を活かし、屛風・掛け軸・行灯などの絵の注文を受けて作品を制作する「副業」をおこなって生活の足しにしていた。このようにして得た収入で、毎日のように多くの友人と飲食をし、料亭へも繰り出した。日記が記された文久年間はまさに幕末動乱の時代。日記にはところどころに世情の記載もあり、石城がただ日々を楽しんでいただけではなく、「武士」としての矜持を持って生活していたことも感じられる。（重田麻紀）
