聖書の本文と対応する物語イニシャル
　小さなゴシック体で書かれた旧約聖書続編『マカバイ記１』（序– 2:44）の写本零葉。『マカバイ記１』の冒頭は、11行分の高さの物語イニシャル ‘C’で始まっていて、文字のなかに、槍を持って突撃する、甲冑に身を固めた中世の騎士の姿が描かれている。この挿絵はユダ・マカバイの姿を描いたもので、『マカバイ記１』(3. 3-4)の「彼は、巨人のように、胸当てを着け、武具に身を固めて、戦場に臨み、剣をもって、陣営をまもった。その働きは、獅子にも似て、獲物にほえかかる子獅子のようだ」という描写に対応していると思われる。ユダ・マカバイはユダヤの独立戦争を指揮した紀元前2世紀の英雄だが、中世では、騎士道精神を完璧に体現した「九偉人」(Nine Worthies)のひとりに数えられていた。「九偉人」とは、古代からヘクトル、アレクサンドロス大王、カエサル、旧約聖書からヨシュア、ダビデ王、ユダ・マカバイ、キリスト教時代からアーサー王、シャルルマーニュ、第一回十字軍を率いたゴドフロワ・ド・ブイヨンの合計9名である。ユダ・マカバイが中世の騎士姿で描かれているのはそのためである。(TM)
