継承された中世写本の伝統
装飾イニシャルや彩色イニシャルで視覚的に文章構造を提示する手法は、中世写本文化から初期印刷文化へと継承された。今回展示する『自然の鑑』のインキュナブラはその典型である。『自然の鑑』は、フランスのドミニコ会士ヴァンサン・ド・ボーヴェが、13世紀中葉に編纂した壮大な知の体系『大いなる鑑』の一角を成す大著である。序文と索引の後、神と天使についての記述から始まり、創世記の天地創造に則して自然界の詳述が続く。慶應所蔵本の版は2部構成で2巻に収められている。各巻の冒頭には12行にわたる空白が残され、印刷後に専門の装飾師の手により、イニシャルが複数色のインクと装飾で美しく施されている（図1）。また各書の冒頭も（一部例外もあるが）赤と青色のイニシャルが彩りを添え、本文の区切りを示すパラフマークや大文字も朱書きされている（図2）。
本書の印刷業者は、その特徴的なローマン体の大文字Rから「R-印刷業者」と称されたが、20世紀に入ると、アドルフ・ルッシュ（1435–97）と同定された（Dziatzko）。なおP・ニーダムは、Type 1を使用した印刷は、ルッシュが義父ヨハン・メンテリン (Johann Mentelin, c. 1410–78) と協働した可能性を示している（Doheny I, lot 16）。 (ST)
