書字の歴史をものがたる「珍品キャビネット」
この18世紀イギリスのマホガニー製の小箱には、書字の歴史を物語るさまざまな原資料が30例ほど収められている。元ケンブリッジ大学キングズ・コレッジ図書館長で稀代の書誌学者であったA. N. L. Munby博士 (1913–74)が所有していたもので、マンビーはこれらを書字の歴史について講義するときに活用していた。もっとも古い資料は、シュメールの都市国家ラガシュで紀元前2140年頃に制作された粘土製の円錐で(図参照)、僧王グデアが神殿の建立に奉納した定礎碑文が楔形文字で刻まれている（『グーテンベルク』, p. 2）。
他にも18世紀にスマトラのバタク文字で書かれた樹皮製の折り本、ギリシア語と古代エジプトのデモティック（民衆文字）が刻まれた7世紀のオストラコン（文字が書かれた陶器などの破片）、古代ローマの大理石墓碑銘板（展示品 no. 2）など、ヨーロッパ、中東、アジアのさまざまな支持素材のサンプルに加えて、古代ローマのスタイラス（鉄筆）や19世紀中国のブロンズ製矢立など文房具の類いも揃っている。まさに文字を愛する者にとっての「珍品キャビネット」である。(TM)
