パピルスに書かれたギリシア語書簡
このパピルスの内容は3世紀半ばにエジプトのアンティノーポリスで商売をしていたアドラストス（ΑΔΡαϹΤΟϹ）という人物が父のテオン（ΘΕωΝΙ）に宛てた書簡で、職業的写字生によって書かれたものとされる(『グーテンベルク』, p. 10)。パピルスは古代エジプトやローマ帝国で、支持素材として広く使用されていた。パピルスの原材料はカヤツリグサ科の水草の１種で、2mほどの高さになる。ナイル川沿いに自生していて、茎がパピルスを作るために使用された。茎の皮を剥ぎ、茎を厚さ2mmほどにスライスしてリボン状の細長い切片にしたものを数日水に浸けた後で、少し重なるように横に並べ、その上から今度は縦に並べる。重しを乗せてプレスし乾燥させると、上下の層が接着してパピルス紙が出来るので、表面を石などで磨いて滑らかにし、葦の茎を削ったペンを用いて書くことができる (八木, pp. 9–15)。(TM)
