持明院基定〈じみょういんもとさだ・1607-1667〉は、幕府の高家（こうけ）大沢基宿〈おおさわもといえ＝基宥・1567-1642〉の子。持明院基久〈もとひさ・1584-1615〉の養嗣子となる。当時、持明院家では元和元年(1615）の大坂夏の陣において基久が横死、その一子基征（もとゆき）もわずか10歳で夭逝し、世尊寺（せそんじ）家から受け継いだ入木道（じゅぼくどう＝書道）の伝承は断絶の危機に瀕していた。が、後水尾天皇〈ごみずのおてんのう・1596-1680〉の勅命により、かつて基久の父・基孝〈もとたか・1520-1611〉より書法を伝授された曼殊院（まんしゅいん）の良恕法親王〈りょうじょほうしんのう・1574-1643〉が、持明院家の傍系であった基定に入木道の秘説を相伝し、辛うじてその命運をつないだ。権中納言を経て、寛文２年〈1662〉には持明院家で初めての権大納言に抜擢される。以来、江戸時代末期まで、持明院家は代々宮廷書道の書き役を務め、基定は入木道中興の太祖と呼ばれる活躍をみせた。しかしながら、基定の遺墨はほとんど伝わっておらず、この短冊は貴重な一葉である。手慣れた書きぶりで、持明院流を着実に継承したことがうかがえる。
