寺井養拙〈てらいようせつ・1640-1711〉は、京都の人。養拙は通称。書法を佐々木志津磨〈ささきしづま・1623-95〉に学び、さらに中国の書を学んで一家を成し、養拙流と呼ばれた。門下は千人を遙かに越え、当時盛んになった看板類はほとんどがこの書体であったと伝えられる。また、養拙は明から伝わる版本によって、中国の各時代の書論にも精通していたようである。『衍極（えんきょく）書法伝流之図』という書流系譜を示す系図を、木版本を通して世に紹介していることからもそれがうかがえる。この短冊は、元旦の書き初めとして揮毫したもの。みられるように、緩やかな筆運びと着実な筆法が、一つのスタイルを樹立している。
