Satomura Joha (1524-1602) was a renga poet of the Momoyama Period. He spent his childhood at Kofukuji Temple, but after his encounter with the renga techer Shukei, he became his disciple and went up to Kyoto. After Shukei passed away, Joha’s teacher was Satomura Shokyu. After Shokyu passed away, Joha was adopted into the Satomura family by inheriting the family headship. He raised Shokyu’s young son. Joha was trained by Sanjonishi Kinyeda (1487-1563) in classical poetry composition and the classics; from Konoe Taneiye (1503-66), he inherited oral instructions on classical literature; and he trained under Sen-no-Rikyu in the art of ceremonial tea. Closely associating with the most powerful figures of the time, such as Oda Nobunaga, Akechi Mitsuhide, Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Toyotomi Hidetsugu, Joha enjoyed power and fame as the supreme renga poet of the day.
