堀秀政〈ほりひでまさ・1553-90〉は、安土・桃山時代の武将。美濃国（岐阜県）の人。父は秀重（ひでしげ）。幼名は菊千代。はじめ斎藤氏の家臣であったが、織田信長に転任し、やがて豊臣秀吉に仕える。越前国や紀伊国での一揆を討伐し、天正９年〈1581〉近江長浜城主となり、翌年、山崎の戦いで明智光秀を敗った。また、賎ケ岳の戦い、長久手の戦いをはじめとする数々の合戦で戦功をたてた。天正13年〈1585〉、侍従となり、越前国北庄十八万石を領す。同18年〈1590〉、小田原征伐で先鋒として出陣したが、陣中で病死した。豊臣政権にとって北国支配の要となる大名であった。この短冊は、伝存稀なる遺墨で、まさしく定家流の書風。定家流の伝播を考える上でも貴重な遺品である。また、料紙は藍と紫の打雲で、歌意に合わせて金泥の日輪が上下に配置されている。
