小堀政次〈こぼりまさつぐ・1542-1604〉は、桃山時代の武将。作庭と遠州流茶道の祖として名高い小堀遠州〈えんしゅう・1579-1647〉の父である。通称は新介（しんすけ）・正次（しょうじ）。羽柴秀長について活躍し、豊臣秀吉より、邑五千石を賜った。また、慶長５年〈1600〉の関ケ原の戦いでは徳川家康方につき、備中松山城を守って、のち同城を治し一万石を領した。63歳で没した。この短冊は、元旦試毫で、金泥で松の下絵を描いた料紙に書写する。息子遠州と同じく、定家流の筆跡が注目される。本来、定家流は遠州の独壇場と考えられていたが、この一葉によって、その由来がむしろ父政次の影響にあることを推知する上で、貴重な遺墨である。また、短冊としても政次の遺品は、世間にほとんど知られていない。森繁夫著の『名家筆跡考』に所載される。
