Sakuragi (years of birth and death unknown) was a high-class courtesan of the late Edo Period who worked at Wachigai-Ya teahouse in the Shimabara pleasure quarters of Kyoto. Excelling in waka, Sakuragi enjoyed the patronage of Otagaki Rengetsu (1791-1875), who taught her poetry writing. Rengetsu, Sakuragi, and Ueda Chikako (a highly-educated geisha of Gion who ran something like a literary salon) were known to have held poetry parties at Rengetsu’s house in Okazaki. Tomioka Tessai (1836-1924), a close friend of Rengetsu’s, described Sakuragi to be a talented woman of strong will.
