『大般若経』巻第二一六の１巻。『大般若経』（大般若波羅蜜多経）は、「般若波羅蜜」（完成された最高の智慧）を説く多くの般若経典群の総称で、全600巻から成る。あらゆる仏典中で最大の経典。唐の玄奘の訳。『法華経』とおなじく経文中に写経功徳があり、この経典を供養するものは諸の神によって常に護られると説くことから、わが国においても、奈良時代以後、平安・鎌倉時代を通じて、しばしば書写された。とりわけ、仏国土を象徴する瑠璃（紺）・金という七宝を使った紺紙金字経の書写供養がさかんに行われた。たとえば、平安時代後期から鎌倉時代初期にかけては、紺紙金字の一切経の遺品も多い（「中尊寺経」「荒川経」「神護寺経」等々）。この「紺紙金字大般若」もこうした仏教信仰の所産である。表紙には金銀泥で宝相華唐草文を描き、見返しには釈迦説法図が描かれる。当時の絵仏師の作画ながら、大和絵の描法を加味しており、仏教絵画史の上からも注目されている。その様式・画風と経文の和様の書風から推して、平安時代後期・12世紀の遺品と推定される。
