The literal translation of ‘te’ in tekagami is ‘hand’ and ‘kagami’ is ‘mirror’; therefore, the term tekagami means an example or exemplar. It is, so to speak, a calligraphic album that one can appreciate and also use as an exemplar for studying the art or as a reference used by kohitsu connoisseurs. The segments which had been carefully detached from ancient poetry collections, either in bound book forms or handscrolls, are pasted on heavy folded pages. Tekagami compilations became popular after the latter Muromachi Period when kohitsu segments found sudden popularity as ornaments in tea rooms. The Tekagami allows students, connoisseurs and collectors alike to view the kohitsu segments in a systematic way. Tekagami production was at its height during the early Edo Period, when many tekagami albums were produced and distributed.
