黄麻紙に『大般若経』巻第三四九を書写する。『大般若経』（大般若波羅蜜多経）は、「般若波羅蜜」（完成された最高の智慧）を説く多くの般若経典群の総称で、全600巻から成る。あらゆる仏典中で最大規模の経典。唐の玄奘の訳。『法華経』とおなじく写経の功徳を説く。この経典を供養するものは諸の神によって常に護られると説かれることから、わが国においても、奈良時代以後、平安・鎌倉時代を通じて数多く書写された。とくに平安時代には、除災招福のためにたびたび『大般若経』１部600巻の書写供養が行われた。また、紺紙金泥の『大般若経』が書写された記録も多い。さらに、一人でこの『大般若経』一部600巻を完写する功徳を遂げたものもあった。この１巻もかような背景においてつくられた。端正で穏和な書は、11世紀に入って誕生する優雅な和様が完成する以前の書風で、10世紀の書写と考えられる。
